I think it involved taking advantage of the post composer where you could set what time you wanted your article to be posted. Some Oppos realized you could send posts back in time such as to the date the internet became public.

I remember it as early as 2008-09. That’s when I got my first “Desk” job and was learning new ways of looking busy while not doing anything. It was veeeery different then, Oppo has evolved immensely.

In the before times, you would create a post and tag it with “oppositelock”. Then you would go to Jalopnik.com/tag/oppositelock and there would be all the misfit posts in their own little area. Then we got serious and were given a link at Jalopnik.com/oppositelock and Jalopnik.com/oppositelock/forum for a couple years until early 2013 when Kinja was launched.

Here’s oppositelock back in 2011, the previous iteration if I recall correctly. Notice the #oppositelock tags to keep all the posts filed to the same spot? Well then we switched to Kinja and everyone threw a shit fit and buggered off to the sausage fest that is no Oppo G+, which is still quite active.

Oppo predates Kinja. It used to be www.jalopnik.com/oppositelock/forum .

Back in the day, all gawkerverse had tags. So, everything you posted on the FP with the tag #oppositelock was automatically in Oppo. And this would be listed in this “sub-forum” of Jalopnik. You could also post directly into Oppo, when you were in the forum. So your post wouldn’t be related to any other forum.

You could basically make a sub-forum of every tag, just by typing jalopnik.com/oppositelock/forum or even jalopnik.com/whateverfloatsyourgoat/forum , gizmodo.com/whatever/forum and so on.

I joined in early 2010, from what I recall. And anyone with an account could post. There was no actual moderation. But I have no idea when exactly this started.

Oppo, as Offtopic existed in ‘09 (maybe ‘08) sometime in either ‘09 or early 2010 saw the change to Oppo. Multiple commenting systems / platforms have come and gone, and with them, many many many comments and posts have disappeared. Oppo was the first community to go to Kinja, and there were a select group of beta users that were in on the first tests.

It hasn’t been edited for time or date, and that was when this iteration of Oppo went live. But there were many other versions that came before. And there will likely be more to follow.

Sheesh I remember all this! The nostalgia, it hurts. I only became an active commenter in 2010, even then they were infrequent and months apart. I never fully understood the difference between Jalopnik and Oppo at the start, and once I did, I wanted authorship. It only took me 2 years to work it out :/
